Why do I only get 100 users per search pattern?

The cap at 100 is a Skype 4.1 restriction, not a message magic restriction. If they returned all possible matches they would overload their servers and crash your computer.

If you go into Skype and do a search just with it, i.e. not through Message Magic, you'll see what I mean.

Using Skype 3.8 you'll get more per search pattern, the cap ranges from 250-300 per term but we've done side by side tests though using large lists of patterns and overall 4.1 seems to return more.
